Plan Your Stay in Taormina and the Surrounding Area
The Taormina area combines a hilltop town, the Ionian coast and villages such as Castelmola and Savoca. Mount Etna, the Alcantara Gorges and Catania offer different day trips from a base near Taormina.
Choose between Taormina, the coast and nearby villages according to your daily plans. Group local visits together, and leave a separate day for longer outings to Mount Etna or Catania.

Where to Stay: Taormina, the Coast or Nearby Villages?
Choose a base around the places you will visit most often. The hilltop centre, waterfront towns and rural properties involve different daily journeys.
Understand the Taormina Area
Taormina stands above the Ionian coast. Castelmola rises farther uphill, while Isola Bella, Giardini Naxos and Letojanni bring the sea into your plans.
Savoca lies inland to the north. Alcantara, Mount Etna and Catania extend the choice of outings beyond the town and its immediate coast.
Match Your Base to Your Plans
Taormina: choose the town for the Ancient Theatre, historic streets and evenings out. Allow for the journey downhill when planning beach days.
Giardini Naxos or Letojanni: consider the coast if beach time is central to your stay. The exact address determines how easily you can reach the waterfront.
Castelmola, Savoca or the countryside: consider these settings for village visits and time away from the busier centre. Allow for hills, road access and evening transport.
Compare villas in Taormina and nearby towns by exact location, access to the coast and travel dates.
Day Trips from Taormina, Local Food and Events
Start with the town and coast, then choose the outings that match your interests. Each linked guide provides more detail for that destination.
Taormina, Castelmola and Savoca
Spend time around Taormina’s Ancient Theatre and historic streets before adding another destination. Castelmola offers a hilltop village visit above the town, with views over the coast.
Savoca makes a separate outing to the north. Its lanes, churches and locations associated with The Godfather give the visit a different focus. Both villages involve slopes, so choose your walking route to suit your group.
Read our Taormina, Castelmola and Savoca guide for individual sights.
Isola Bella, Giardini Naxos and Letojanni
Choose your coastal day by the setting and access you prefer. Isola Bella sits below Taormina, while Giardini Naxos and Letojanni offer different waterfront bases.
A sea view does not tell you how to reach the beach. Consider steps, the route from your accommodation and where you will leave the car. Beach surfaces and facilities vary along the coast.
Use our guide to beaches near Taormina to choose a beach rather than trying to visit several in one day.
Plan an Alcantara or Mount Etna Excursion
The Alcantara Gorges offer a river landscape inland from Taormina. Decide between a sightseeing visit and an organised activity before planning the rest of the day.
A Mount Etna excursion needs a defined route and meeting point. Northern and southern access points are different destinations. A vineyard visit is also different from a volcano walk.
Some organised trips combine Etna and Alcantara. Read the stops and duration before booking. For volcanic routes, follow current access restrictions and your guide’s instructions.
Catania and Acireale as Separate Outings
Give Catania its own place in the itinerary for markets, architecture and city streets. Choose a few stops instead of fitting the city around an already full Etna day.
Acireale and the Aci towns offer another outing along the eastern side of Sicily. They are separate destinations, not part of Taormina’s historic centre.
For a meal during your city visit, read our Catania food and drink guide. Restaurant opening days and booking arrangements may have changed since publication.
Food, Wine and Products from the Area
Start with granita and brioche on the coast. In Castelmola, look for the village’s almond wine. Etna wines and Bronte pistachio products connect the trip with the volcano’s surrounding towns.
When buying pistachio pesto or sweets, read the producer, origin and ingredient percentages on the label. For lava-stone souvenirs, ask who made the piece and where.
Arrange winery appointments and transport before tasting. Scent of Sicily guests can browse our food, wine and local experiences and ask which options fit their base and dates.
Taormina Film Fest and Regional Events
The Taormina Film Fest brings cinema to the town. Plan accommodation and journeys around the screenings you want to attend.
The Acireale Carnival and Bronte Pistachio Festival take place in other towns. Each needs its own travel plan.
Other regional traditions include Sant’Agata in Catania and the Ottobrata in Zafferana Etnea.
These articles introduce the events and may describe past editions. Use the organiser’s current programme for dates, venues and tickets.
Build Your Taormina Area Itinerary
These outlines count full sightseeing days, excluding arrival and departure. Adjust the balance of town visits, beaches and excursions to your group.
Three or Four Days around Taormina
With three days, spend one in Taormina and one by the coast. Choose one main outing for the third: a village visit, Alcantara or an Etna excursion.
A fourth day gives you room for another choice. Castelmola can take part of a town day, while Savoca works as a separate village outing. Leave enough time to enjoy each stop.
A Week of Town, Coast and Day Trips
One possible week includes a Taormina day, a coastal day, a village day and an Etna excursion. Add Catania on a separate day if city visits interest you.
Use another day for Alcantara, Acireale or a booked wine visit. Keep the remaining day flexible for weather changes, another beach visit or time at your accommodation.
Plan Transport, Seasons and Reservations
Taormina’s centre, the coastal railway station and your accommodation may require separate connections. Consult Interbus routes and timetables for your travel date, including the return journey.
Spring and autumn give alternatives to a summer beach-focused stay. Conditions on Mount Etna can differ sharply from the coast. Read our Sicily weather guide and use a current forecast for each excursion.
Book ahead when reservations are required for events, winery visits or guided outings. On Etna, consult the Etna Park’s current notices and confirm arrangements with your guide.
Continue Your Sicily Trip
For a longer journey, use our Sicily travel guide to choose another regional base. A separate stay can give you more time in a distant area than repeated day trips.

Planning a Taormina Area Trip: Frequently Asked Questions
How many days should I spend in the Taormina area?
Allow three or four full days for Taormina and a few nearby visits. A week leaves more time for the coast, villages and a separate Etna or Catania outing.
With four days, spend one in Taormina, one on the coast and one visiting a village such as Savoca. Keep the remaining day for your main excursion. Castelmola can replace part of a town day if you prefer more time outside the centre.
With seven days, add another excursion and leave a day free for weather changes or a slower pace. These plans exclude arrival and departure. Use our Sicily travel guide when combining Taormina with another region.
Should I stay in Taormina or on the coast?
Stay in Taormina for evenings in the historic centre. Choose Giardini Naxos or Letojanni if you want to spend more of your time by the sea.
Taormina sits above the coast, so a town-centre address is not the same as a beachfront location. Coastal accommodation can make beach visits easier, but the exact address and route still matter. Hillside homes outside these towns may involve driving even when the sea looks close.
Choose your base around the journeys you will make most often. If you plan to rent a villa, compare villas in Taormina and nearby towns by their stated location and access.
Which day trips from Taormina need a full day?
Set aside a full day for an Etna excursion or a substantial visit to Catania. Short village visits and time on the nearby coast need different plans.
An Etna day depends on the chosen slope, meeting point and activity. A winery visit, a lower-level walk and a guided higher-altitude route are not interchangeable. Alcantara can be a separate outing, especially if you want time for an organised activity.
Some tours combine Etna and Alcantara, but the stops and time available vary. Read the itinerary before adding anything else to that day. Our Mount Etna guide introduces the volcano; confirm current access and route arrangements with your operator.
Do I need a car around Taormina?
You can stay in central Taormina without a car. A car becomes more useful for rural accommodation and several separate trips into the surrounding countryside.
Bus services connect destinations around Taormina, but the nearest stop, return timetable and onward journey matter. A coastal railway station does not put you in Taormina’s hilltop centre. For evening outings, plan how you will get back before leaving your accommodation.
A booked excursion or transfer may suit an Etna visit better than hiring a car for the whole stay. Ask where pickup takes place, rather than assuming collection from every property. Start with our Taormina town guide to decide how much of your stay will focus on the centre.
Can I combine Taormina and Catania in one trip?
Yes. Taormina and Catania work well within the same stay, with a separate day for Catania rather than a rushed stop between other excursions.
Taormina offers a hilltop town and nearby beaches. Catania adds a larger city’s markets, streets and architecture. Choose a small group of sights in Catania, then allow time for lunch and the return journey. Include transport to and from your accommodation when planning the day.
If you want several evenings in both places, splitting the stay may suit you better than repeated return trips. Acireale is another possible outing, not a compulsory addition to a Catania day. Read our Catania city guide to choose your stops.
