Just a few kilometres far from Taormina, in the countryside following the road to Mount Etna, a beautiful naturalistic site is located in the Alcantara valley: the Alcantara River, twisting and turning throughout the valley, flows between up-to-25-metre tall and very narrow (2 to 5 metres) gorges. This fascinating natural canyon was not shaped by the river: instead, it probably originated from seismic movements from Mount Etna. Some parts of these gorges can be visited: a tiny beach is set in a little larger area, and guided excursions are available to discover this wonderful site. Plenty of typical “agriturismo” can be found nearby: delicious typical recipes of the area are served with flavoursome local wines at very affordable prices.
