Palermo's Cathedral

2018 is surely Palermo’s year.

The Sicilian capital is worldwide known for its historic, artistic and architectural heritage and it’s surely one of the most beautiful cities of Italy. If you think about Palermo, the first imagine coming to your mind is a big mosaic: Palermo is full of colors and shades, each tile is peculiar and represents the long and fascinating story of the city and its ancient dominations.  From this year, there’s something more to know about this incredible city: Palermo has been named Italian Capital of Culture for 2018, a prestigious acknowledgment by Italy’s Ministry of Culture.  This title will certainly bring economic benefits to the city: it will receive a million euro award for promotion and public investment to promote cultural activities and increase the value of its artistic heritage.

The title of Italian Capital of Culture lasts for one year but celebrations have already started and the majestic Teatro Massimo—whose façade was lit up with red-white-green lights — has already scheduled opera performances for 2018, including Verdi’s “Nabucco,” Puccini’s “Turandot,” and the ballet “Adam’s Passion” (directed by Bob Wilson).

The variety of activities and initiatives will not only take place  in Palermo, but all around its metropolitan area, from Monreale to Castelbuono, in the beautiful Madonie Mountains. Take a look to our  villas in Palermo Area to find the perfect accommodation nearby!

But wait, that’s not all: this year Palermo will also host the famous itinerant European Biennial of Contemporary Art  “Manifesta 12”, after Saint Petersburg and Zurich. And don’t forget the Arab-Norman Circuit, listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, including nine monuments, seven of which only in the city of Palermo and the two  majestic cathedrals of Cefalù and Monreale… another way to discover the ancient treasures of this wonderful area of the island!

So, it looks like Palermo this year is really the place to be.
