historic market in Palermo

Left alone the sun and the sea, the days at the beach and the everlasting dinners, what should you do during your vacation in Sicily? Which are the chances you cannot miss? What will make your stay unique?

We think this is exactly the kind of questions many of our guests ask themselves before coming to Sicily, and we’re really happy to help them. This is why we have tried to figure out 3 special things you absolutely have to do during your Sicilian holidays. This is not everything you should try, the list would be definitely too long, so we collected just a few hints.

Sunday morning market. Sicilian culinary tradition is known all over the world, it’s based on poor and simple ingredients you can buy everyday at the market. Going to the market in Sicily is a unique experience, especially if you visit one of the historic markets in Palermo or Catania. Go there on a Sunday in the early morning, blend in with the Sicilians, and witness this true spectacle.

The red, the blood and the white. Wine. Along with food and sea wine is what creates the very essence of Sicily. In the last few years the importance of Sicilian wineries has grown or we should say has been discovered by the rest of the world. You have to try at least a glass of Nero d’Avola, a strong red made with the winegrapes of the Southeastern region, or a Cerasuolo di Vittoria. If you like white wines try Catarratto, its sweet and unique, and almost any restaurant on the Northwestern coast serves it. Sicily is also famous for its fortified wines, the most famous among them is surely the Marsala, known all over the world, but if you’re looking for something truly unique you should try visiting the old Vucciria market in Palermo and go to the Taverna Azzurra, have a glass of Sangue, its name means blood and it was specifically created for this tavern almost two hundred years ago.

In between two seas. Travel to the Southernmost point of the island, here is the beach of Portopalo di Capo Passero. There is a small isle here named Isola delle Correnti (isle of the currents) that you can reach just walking across the sea when the tide is low enough. This precise point is where the Mediterranean Sea meets the Aegan Sea.
