Autumn in Sicily is the time of country fests, traditional festivals held every year, mostly in the towns of the inland: the perfect chance to discover the charme of Sicilian countryside and its mountainous regions. It’s also an opportunity to taste the typical autumnal flavours of the island.
In late of October there will be a number of events you can attend, we’ve spoken about a few of them on our blog. The one we want to suggest today to the ones of you who’ll come visit Sicily in the next weeks will be held in Tusa, a charming hamlet in the Northeastern area of Sicily.
We’re talking about the Chestnut country fest, that reached its 31th edition. The festival takes place every year on the last weekend of October and celebrates the tasteful roast chestnut, the autumnal street food par excellence, but also a variety of local products typical of this time of the year.
The main event will take place in the central Piazza Mazzini: here you’ll taste the just roasted chestnuts, but you’ll also find a variety of stands selling local food and wine products. Try the traditional Tusa’s sandwich with sausage. Then in the evenings a live show will be held in the square featuring live music and traditional dances.
Tusa is one of the most charming towns in the province of Messina, less known and crowded than Cefalù but at least beautiful as much. The old town still retains the appearance of the typical medieval citadel, keeping intact its architectural balance, which finds its highest expression in the layout of its streets and in the sacred buildings. Visit one of its numerous churches or just take a relaxing walk across the streets and the alleys to feel immediately surrounded by history. The Chestnut Fest is but a chance to discover the fascinating Tusa and its surroundings!
